Youth and adults from Wheelersburg United Methodist Church recently returned home from a mission trip to Chicago. The weeklong trip was hosted by the Center for Student Missions (CSM).

CSM provides ministry opportunities in large urban centers throughout the United States. While in Chicago the group volunteered at the Carole Robertson Center, a head start center for low income parents. They also worked at various food pantry’s and soup kitchens. Each CSM trip also explores the cultural diversity of the city. This includes prayer walks to different ethnic neighborhoods and also eating at a variety of authentic ethnic restaurants.

The students experienced Chinese, Peruvian, Middle Eastern, and Mexican cuisine. It was also the first time many of the students had ever used public transportation, the elevated trains and the Chicago bus system. While in Chicago the group stayed in dorms at the North Park University.

Scheduled free time allowed the group to see Wrigley Field, visit Navy Pier, and view the city high atop the Willis Tower.

“Mission trips like these allow the students to encounter poverty and homelessness in ways we don’t see in Southern Ohio. It was quite an eye opening experience for all of them. By exploring different cultures the kids better understand the vastness of God’s creativity,” Pastor Perry Prosch said.

On the way home the group was able to stop in Columbus and watch the baseball team win the state championship.
