John Clifford Crabtree, 96, of Lucasville, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Heartland of Portsmouth.
He was born May 5, 1917, at Clifford, Ohio, a son of the late Link and Didama Crabtree Crabtree.
Cliff retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railroad, formerly N&W railroad in 1982 with 27 years of service. He also worked at Gahm’s Market in Lucasville for a number of years. He was a member of the Lucasville Church of Christ in Christian Union and has served in various offices in the church. Cliff’s favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, and horseshoes.
He married Esta Wheeler on Dec. 30, 1939, at Piketon, Ohio. They were married for 57 years. She preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 1996; also preceding him, his son, Michael Wayne Crabtree; his daughter-in-law Jan Crabtree; sisters, Louise Ferguson, Dorothy Claxon, Zelma Fairchild, and Carolyn Archey;
He is survived by one son, Donald R. (Coleen) Crabtree of Lucasville; two daughters, Carol Sue (Charles) Gregory of Tarlton, Ohio, and Joyce Elaine Crabtree of Lucasville; six grandchildren, Craig (Margaret) Crabtree, Darren (Mary Kate) Crabtree, Jeffrey (Rhonda) Crabtree, Rita (Jerry) Hoffman, David (Heather) Gregory, and Amanda (Jeffrey) Baker; three stepgrandchildren, Sherry, Lisa, and Shannon; 10 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Bo, Curtis, Nick, and Nate Crabtree, Jeremy and Justin Hoffman, Autumn Gregory, Colin Gregory, and Mikala Baker; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Crabtree of Lucasville; four sisters, Letha Caldwell of Lucasville, Minta Kinney of West Portsmouth, Ruby (August) Archey of Galloway, and Barbara (Bernie) Newton of Sugar Grove, Ohio; brother-in-law Charles Archey; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville with John Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in Scioto Cemetery. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and an hour before the funeral Tuesday.
