The environment has become an important issue for students at Notre Dame Schools. This week, during two assemblies, the students learned about landfills and recycling from representatives of Rumpke and the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District. The National Honor Society and the Key Club are actively involved in sponsoring the school’s “green” project.

Recycling is one of the best ways to have a positive impact on the world. It’s important to both the natural environment and us.

As Jonathan Kissell pointed out to the students, Rumpke alone placed 7.4 billion pounds of waste in one year at its landfills in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Just think about all the other waste around the world. Kissell, senior communication coordinator for Rumpke, said 60 percent of that amount could have been recycled.
