PDT Staff Report

Two members of the Daily Times newsroom took home second place Sunday in the 2012 Ohio Associated Press Media Editor’s (OAPME) Awards in Columbus.

Daily Times Content Manager Bob Strickley and writer Ryan Ottney learned in March that they were nominated for the OAPME Awards, Division II, Best Sports Enterprise Story category for an article on which they collaborated — “Realities of Racism,” published in the Daily Times on March 16, 2012.

According to the Ohio Associated Press, “The annual APME awards represent the finest work of Ohio reporters, editors, photographers and illustrators last year — the best of the best. This year, 67 daily newspapers submitted 2,742 entries in the contest. And 31 broadcasters submitted 329 entries.”

The Daily Times was recognized in Division II, which includes Ohio newspapers with a daily print circulation between 8,000 and 12,999.

The OAPME Awards ceremony was held in Columbus on Sunday, May 18, where Strickley and Ottney were announced the second place winners. Judges called their article a “Nice look at topics not often addressed,” and “informative.” First place went to Blake Williams, of the Lancaster-Eagle Gazette, for his story, “Multisport Athletes.”

“We’re proud that the Ohio Associated Press Managing Editors chose to recognize this story for second place in the Division II Best Sports Enterprise category. It shows that the Portsmouth Daily Times editorial staff, in this case Ryan Ottney and Bob Strickley, do more than just report the news and sports as it happens,” Daily Times Publisher John Clark said. “It is our hope that the coverage helped to open a dialogue that will lead to better understanding and tolerance among people of all races. We appreciate the recognition from Ohio APME and congratulate Ryan and Bob on a job well done.”

Prior to joining the Daily Times in 2011, Strickley worked at a series of weekly newspapers south of Boston, Mass. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication, and previously worked in television broadcasting and as a stringer for two Ohio web publications prior to moving to Massachusetts.

Ottney has a bachelor’s degree in English with a journalism minor from Shawnee State University and has been a staff writer for the Daily Times since 2006. He previously received the “Infinity Award” from Lifeline of Ohio in 2009 for excellence in news reporting on issues of organ and tissue donation; the “Ohio School Board Association Media Honor Roll Award” from the OSBA in 2010 and 2012, and third place in the 2012 “Best of Heartland Award” from Daily Times publisher Heartland Publications (now called Civitas Media).

This is the first AP Award for the Daily Times since 2004, when the newspaper staff won second place for “Best Daily Sports Section,” third place for “Page One Layout,” and Honorable Mention for “Best Community Service” by the Associated Press Society of Ohio.
