Annual Trout Derby set for weekend

The 48th Annual Portsmouth Area Jaycees Trout Derby is set to take place Saturday, April 27 at Turkey Creek Lake with fishing starting at 6 a.m.
Charles Hammond, Trout Derby Chairman for the Portsmouth Area Jaycees said this fishing tournament is offered free of charge for the community.
“This is a family oriented event that has something to offer everyone,” Hammond said.
Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in three categories, teens 13-17, adult 18-59 and seniors 60 and older.
This year will feature a new fly fishing area, located at Turkey Creek and the Backpack Trail Parking Lot.
The event will feature a special fishing area for kids 12 and under with prizes awarded for catching tagged fish.
Activities of the day include an appearance by Woody the Owl and a number of children’s activities such as games, fishing education, face painting and many more.
The Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District will hold aquarium and fishing programs starting at 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
A Birds of Prey Program will be held at 8 a.m. in the kids fishing area. Participants will be able to see a Red Tailed Hawk, American Kestrel and a Great Horned Owl.
Southern Ohio Medical Center will be offering blood pressure reading and healthy lifestyles education from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the kids fishing area.
An Electro-Fishing Demonstration will be given by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Roosevelt Lake.
The awards ceremony for the day will take place at 3 p.m. at the campground amphitheater.
