FridaY, U.S. Representative Brad Wenstrup (OH-2) met with USEC officials and employees at the plant in Piketon, to receive an update on the progress of the Research, Development, and Demonstration (RD&D) program. While visiting the facility, Wenstrup expressed his continued support for the program and thanked the employees for their work to support America’s energy independence.

The Department of Energy and USEC are executing the $350 million cooperative program to confirm the readiness of the American Centrifuge technology, the next-generation U.S. uranium enrichment capabilities.

“The American Centrifuge Project in Piketon, Ohio is imperative to providing for our energy security needs, and is critical for our national security. I appreciate the work and strong support of my colleagues in the Ohio delegation, including Rep. Bill Johnson (OH-06) on this project. I will continue to work with Congress and the administration to support the completion of the RD&D program,” Wenstrup said.

USEC Inc. announced last week it has completed construction of its American Centrifuge commercial demonstration cascade at Piketon. The 120-machine cascade is the centerpiece of a cooperative research, development and demonstration program with the U.S. Department of Energy. That program is intended to reduce technical risks and improve the future prospects of commercial deployment of the American Centrifuge technology.

“We were honored to host Congressman Wenstrup and provide him with a project update and a personal tour of our recently completed commercial demonstration cascade,” Dan Rogers, General Manager, American Centrifuge operations, said. “We appreciate the Congressman’s support of American Centrifuge, and we look forward to partnering with him and the rest of the Ohio delegation to make this project successful.”
