MONTGOMERY, W.Va. — The Shawnee State baseball team could not overcome a 3-0 deficit and lost to the Golden Bears of West Virginia Tech, 5-3, in a non-conference affair at Epling Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears (24-19) saw senior Colin Keim go 3-for-3 with an RBI and strong relief pitching in the losing effort.

With the loss, Shawnee State dropped their first non-conference game since losing to Ohio-Christian University on Monday, March 4. The Bears had a 10-game non-conference win streak which marked a season best entering today’s game and are now 18-10 playing outside of the Mid-South Conference.

After starter Taylor Smith retired the side in the bottom of the first inning, the Golden Bears jumped on Shawnee State first with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second to take a lead and never looked back.

After going scoreless in the first two innings, the Bears got two runs back in the top of the third inning. Shawnee State got their first run when Todd Queener scored on a wild throw as Tyler Bice –who reached on a walk— advanced to third base. Keim then followed the play with a single to center field for the Bears second run of the game, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Smith, who tossed five innings allowing four runs on seven hits, threw scoreless third and fourth innings allowing only two hits. However, the Golden Bears struck once more in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-2.

Continuing to fight from behind, Shawnee State answered right back with a run of their own in the top of the sixth inning. Keim started the inning with a double to left-center field and later scored on a wild pitch after Jake Lankheit advanced him to third base on a single.

Cody Spires, Byran Sharkey and Matt Bonar all came into relief to combine throwing three innings allowing one run on two hits.

Shawnee State will continue their current four-game road trip as they will travel to Georgetown, Ky. to take on (RV) Georgetown College in a MSC showdown before returning home for a single game with Berea College.
