Shawnee State University celebrated Diversity Week from Monday, March 25 through Saturday, March 30. The “Be Educated About Diversity” (B.E.A.D.) project encompassed several diversity issues, such as race, ethnicity, accessibility issues, gender, sexual orientation and religion.

On Monday, in the University Center Room 230 West, the B.E.A.D. project activity asked participants to examine themselves, their lives, and the people they are surrounded by in light of several possible diversity categories.

Tuesday, “A Day in the Life” participants met from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and then spent the day in an alternate identity to experience what others experience on a daily basis. The difference can be ethnicity, racial, sexual orientation, age, ability and gender.

Wednesday, March 27, a panel, diversity quiz and label activity was held in UC Room 230 West. Participants experienced the effects of inclusion and exclusion in a simulated activity. Participants were given a label that they can’t see but others can and they will be treated according to their labels. Students also tested their diversity knowledge through a series of quizzes of their choice. Following the activities there was a panel of individuals from diverse backgrounds to talk about how labels have affected their lives and caused undue issues because of those labels.

Thursday was the, “Where the Spirit Is” Church Fair held with local churches, temples and mosques in the area represented in the UC Lobby 104 and 108. It was an opportunity to learn about the many places to worship and interact with the local community.

Thursday evening, there was “Guess Who’s Straight” panel discussion to challenge your thinking and break down stereotypes as the audience is asked to identify the sexual orientation of the panel members.

Saturday evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., was a Drag Show held in the Sodexo Ballroom UC 230. This show culminated Diversity Week.
