Harry McGiffin, Jr., 86


Harry E. McGiffin, Jr., 86, of Portsmouth, passed on March 26, 2013. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and worked as an operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad before transferring to Portsmouth, Ohio. He worked as a dispatcher and retired from the N&W/N&S Railroad.


He proudly served his country as a radioman for “Operation Iceberg” in the US Navy during WW II. He was a mason; long-time member of the Grand Chapter Order of The Eastern Star; life member of the VFW and American Legion. He was also a long-time member of Central Presbyterian Church, and served in many lay positions. Harry and his wife, Opal, were volunteers for the hospital guild that was instrumental in raising money to build and improve the Scioto Memorial Hospital, now SOMC. Harry also was able to serve his fellows veterans, less fortunate than he, as a Veterans Service Commissioner for many years, also retiring from that position.


While Harry found time for all of these; he also was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.


He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence Opal McGiffin; sons, Edward A. (Joyce) McGiffin of Fort Wayne, Ind., Richard L. (Mary) McGiffin of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Carol A. (Jim) Horr of Farmington Hills, Mich.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry E. and Grace McGiffin, Sr.; and a sister, Ruth Haxton.


Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth with the Reverend Evan Fisher officiating. Private burial services will take place at Prairie Chapel Cemetery, Coshocton, Ohio. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Daehlers. A Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.


Following the funeral, military rites will be presented by the Honor Detail of James Dickey Post 23 American Legion at the funeral home.
