Joseph Smith, 80

Joseph Franklin Smith, age 80, of S.R. 348 Otway, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 4, 2013, at his residence. He was born on July 14, 1932, in Otway, Ohio, to the late Curtis and Ocie Hayslip Smith.

Surviving are his former wife, Carol Swymm, and one son, Michael Smith both of Pineda, Fla., two brothers: Rodney and Charles Smith, and one sister, Desi. He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Roy Smith, and sisters: Gladys, Geneva, Eleanor, Dorothy, and Nancy.

After serving with the U.S. Military he returned home to work for the Taylor Lumber Co. and retired from the Empire Detroit Steel after 26 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, where he earned the rank of Corporal while serving in Germany. He was an avid fisherman who loved nature and all things outdoors. He worked in timber and farming as a child, and enjoyed his long retirement by cutting firewood and delivering to people in the area. He worked hard right up to his death and should be recognized for his hard work in providing for his family. He had many friends in Scioto County and will be sadly missed.

Graveside services will 1 p.m. Monday in the Moon Cemetery with Jack Powell officiating. Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion-Wm. A. Baker Post #363. Calling hours will not be observed.
