Thinking about a career in carpentry, computer science or criminal justice? Tonight’s your chance to check out the many high school and adult education programs available at the Scioto County Career Technical Center (SciotoTech) in Lucasville. The school is hosting its annual Open House at its campus on Vern Riffe Drive tonight from 5-8 p.m.

The Open House is an opportunity for parents and family to see what’s going on at SciotoTech, but it’s also an chance for anyone interested in attending the school to see what they have to offer.

“It is an opportunity for the public to come, even if they have a child that may be in grade school or junior high that may have an interest in a particular skill or program. They can come out and visit as well. People who may be interested in improving their skill for their current job, or maybe transitioning into a new career field, they can come look at our adult program and get information,” Post-Secondary Director Marquita Riepenhoff said.

Businesses and industries are also invited, she said, to learn how SciotoTech prepares students to meet the needs of the current work environment and how the school can specifically meet their own workforce needs.

Each year nearly 500 people attend the Open House, which begins this year with a free chili dinner in the cafeteria at 5 p.m. After warming up, visitors are invited to tour the campus and check out classroom labs, student projects, and meet with instructors and administrators.

“All of labs will be open for secondary. Our adult education will have tables and displays setup in the Taylor Building where people can see what we do in adult-ed, but the actual labs will be open to the public for secondary and secondary projects will be on display,” Riepenhoff said.

The masonry lab, she said, is always very exciting with large students projects on display, and the cosmetology lab offers community services on a weekly basis.

“In our cosmetology labs are great opportunities for people to come in and see the services we provide on a weekly basis for the community to come in and have the students cut and do hair,” Riepenhoff said.

Free services will also be available to the public during the Open House. The high school health tech prep program will be conducting glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings, and representatives from Southern State Community College will be available to share information about their classes and programs — some of which are offered at SciotoTech.
