John Spriggs, 80

John William Spriggs, 80, of Lucasville, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 31, 1932, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Louis Randall and Ann Jane White Spriggs.

John was a retired operating engineer for Ohio Asphalt, a US Navy Korean War veteran, serving as a machinist on the USS Shenandoah, and a 1950 Clearcreek High School graduate. John was the first Signal Lieutenant for the Valley Township Volunteer Fire Department for 21 years, member of the William A. Baker Post of the American Legion, and was an avid bowler.

He is survived by two sons, Anthony (Pam) Spriggs of Lucasville, Timothy (Angie) Spriggs of Otway; four daughters Sharon Secrest (Stewart Maier) of Dublin, Melody Taylor (Maria Little) of Lakeland, Fla., Lisa (Dane) Morgan of Portsmouth, and Jodi (Sam) Lawson of South Shore, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two brothers Don Spriggs of Columbus and David Spriggs of Lucasville; four sisters, Ann O’Rourke and Martha Shope both of Lucasville, Nancy Williams of Crestview, Fla., and Sandra Branham of McVeigh, Ky.; and his very special friend, Ruby Hubbard.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lena Altman, March 30, 1998; and two brothers Robert and Montie Spriggs.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville with Ray Matheny and Bud Mefford officiating. Burial will follow in Lucasville Cemetery where military graveside rites will be performed by the William A Baker and James Irwin Posts of the American Legion. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and an hour before the funeral Friday at the funeral home.
