A West Virginia man is facing multiple felony drug charges following a traffic stop Thursday in Lawrence County. Joseph O. Smith, 40, of Huntington, is charged with trafficking in heroin and possession of heroin, both felonies of the second degree.

Troopers from the Ironton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol say they stopped a 1995 Chevrolet Suburban on U.S. 52 near Burlington, at approximately 3:30 p.m. for a traffic violation. Troopers said the observed “criminal indicators” and a drug-sniffing canine from the Huntington, West Virginia Police Department alerted on that vehicle.

Troopers said the subsequent search revealed approximately 12 grams of heroin with a street value of $2,000. Smith was incarcerated in the Lawrence County Jail.
