Locals head to national march for life

A group of 36 people left from Scioto County Wednesday afternoon to attend the 40th Annual March for Life in Washington D.C. on Friday. This is the seventh time a group from the area has gone to Washington for the march.
The group is made up of people from area churches and from Notre Dame High School.
“This is an opportunity for us to witness as a Christian community asking that Roe v. Wade be reversed. We pray for the legal protection of the unborn here in our country,” said Fr. Joseph Yokum, Pastor of St. Monica Church and St. Peters in Wheelersburg.
Yokum said this will be his 11th time he has attended the national march.
He said there was not one march that stood over the other but, “every time we have an opportunity to go with the students and see the conversions that happen to the young people as their hearts are turned and opened up to what it is we are actually doing there, is great.”
He said the hope for this trip is, “that we grow closer together in our relationship with Christ but also we silently witness to change hearts in Washington D.C.”
According to the website www.marchforlife.org, “on Friday, Jan, 25 the March for Life Education and Defense Fund will host its annual Washington D.C. event to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision on abortion. Each year the March draws thousands of pro-life activists and supporters from around the country to rally at the National Mall and march to the steps of the Supreme Court.”
“The March for Life is a demonstration of unity that we need to continue the fight to win over the hearts and minds of all Americans,” said Jeanne Monahan, President of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund in a released statement.
The march will take place Friday on the National Mall.
On Saturday, Jan. 26, there will be a Scioto County March for Life held at 1 p.m. with an indoor program at 2 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Activity Center, 805 Offnere St., in Portsmouth.
The event will feature singing by the Clay High Chorus with guest speakers State Representative Dr. Terry Johnson and State Senator Joe Uecker.
