A special election is being held in Greenup County, Ky., today to ask votes if the sale of alcohol should be permitted within the county. Currently the sale of alcohol is prohibited within Greenup County.

Jeremy Bates with the Greenup County Coalition for Economic Development, said allowing the sale of alcohol would be one of the first steps to bringing more business to the county.

“I would like to bring in business to Greenup County. I would like to bring in restaurants, hotels and a number of other things. There is no reason Greenup County can support major industry, we sit right on the river on two major highways with a director shot connector to the industrial parkway,” Bates said. “We (Greenup County) have everything any major city has. What we don’t have is a proper attitude.”

He said the first step in making all of this happen is to bring in entertainment and restaurants with legalizing the sale of alcohol.

“This is the first step in a thousand steps that we need to take but, this is a crucial first step,” Bates said.

He said knowledge has been key for this election.

“I feel really good about tomorrow. I had 2,600 people sign a petition and more than half of those people opposed the idea at first. I was able to explain to them why this is a good thing,” Bates said.

He said voting precincts throughout Greenup County will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Bates said some alternate voting locations have been set up for those who typically vote at a school because school will be in session.

“I think people should take the time to educate themselves before the election. If this is enacted there will be a number of regulations and stipulations establishments will have to abide by,” Bates said.

Calls to known opposition to the measure were left unreturned at press time.
