The Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross announced Friday night they would be having a Dancing With Our Stars fundraising event in March. The local stars participating in the event were announced during a Media Kick-off event Friday night.

The local stars participating in this year’s event include, Jason Hanley, Owner of Party Pros, Marty Redden, Fire Safety/Emergency Management Manager at USEC, Elizabeth Blevins, Director of Communications for Shawnee State University, Barb Borden-Gibson, Project Director of the Scioto County WIC Program/Registered Dietician, Wendi Waugh, Administrative Director of Southern Ohio Medical Center Cancer Services and Community Health and Wellness.

Elizabeth Scott, Community Relations, Fluor-B&W Portsmouth, Jeremy Burnside, Attorney, Clyde Fenton, Optometrist/Band Leader, Nathan Bennington, DO, Diagnostic Radiologist SOMC and Amy Hassel, Owner/Stylist Gabby’s Grand Salon will also participate.

The event will take place March 22 at the SOMC Friends Center starting at 6 p.m. with gourmet Hors d’oeuvers with the show will beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“We are so excited to bring this to our community. This is going to be an evening filled full of great entertainment for our local community as we raise funds for our local chapter,” said Mary Arnzen, Executive Director of the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

According to Vicky Hatcher, event coordinator, each of the stars have been paired with a local semiprofessional dancer and have selected their own music to dance to.

“Each of the stars will be helping to raise money for the event. How they do that is by votes, we need your support to help them be the winner of the trophy,” Hatcher said.

Arnzen said the winner of the competition will be based on the fund raising from the stars.

“Each vote is in the form of a dollar, that will be donated to the local chapter. You can also vote for your favorite star online. You can stop in at the Red Cross office on Robinson Ave. and cast your vote or you can support some of the stars individual fund raising activities,” Hatcher said.

General ticket sales for the event begins Jan. 28 with seating limited and is by reservation only. Tickets will be available at american.redcross.org/orvcdwos or at the Red Cross office at 1801 Robinson Ave. Portsmouth.

Burnside said he and his dancing partner, Autumn Thompson, are not worried about the competition because they already claimed ownership on the trophy.

“Autumn danced in the Nutcracker, so she’s got a lot of experience. I advised her that she should purchase some steel toed boots for when I step on her feet. We’ve started practicing already we’re doing the polka,” Burnside said. “We’re going to be practicing two nights a week and hopefully by March we’ll be prepared.”

When asked what he thought about the competition Burnside said, “My partner Autumn Thompson and I have already called dibs on the trophies. So the dancing is just going to be a formality at this point.”

Waugh said she and her partner Dan Gray have been practicing for the competition.

“We’ve been really practicing, we’re taking this seriously,” Waugh said.

When asked what she thought about the competition, Waugh said, “I’m not scared, not intimidated at all. We have this competition in the tie, 50 shades worth.”
