Michael Mougey, 63

Michael Ray Mougey (Mike), 63, of Sierra Vista, Ariz. peacefully passed away Jan. 6, 2013, with his two eldest daughters by his side who lovingly cared for him throughout his illness. He was born Oct. 10, 1949, in Portsmouth, Ohio to the late Emory and Mary Mougey. He was raised in Sciotodale and attended Wheelersburg High School. Mike was a lifelong Ohio resident until 2012 when he retired to Arizona to be near his daughters and grandchildren. He fell in love with the desert southwest and it didn’t take him long to make friends who shared his love of dirt track racing and classic cars. At the time of his death, he and his oldest grandson were restoring a 1940 Chevrolet.

Before retirement, Mike spent most of his life as a mechanic and owned several auto shops in the Portsmouth area. In 2003, he was an independent truck driver and in 2009 joined the Danny Herman Trucking Company out of Mountain City, Tenn. where he earned several safe driver awards.

Mike’s true passion in life was dirt track racing. He built his first race car in 1968 with the help of best friend Dave Carter, and from that time on he was “Wide Open.” He raced at numerous tracks, his favorite being Southern Ohio Speedway. At the end of his driving career, he worked for Craig “Fudge” Leist building cars and traveling the dirt track racing circuit. Up until the very end of his life, Mike retold numerous funny racing stories from over the years which always involved Biggie, Jeff, Kenny, Fudge, among many others. Every story always ended with his daughters and grandchildren erupting in laughter.

He is survived by three daughters, Sheri (Mougey) Lipscomb and Melissa (Mougey) Caswell of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Brittany Mougey of Lucasville; one son, Robert Mougey of Portsmouth; two sisters, Judy (Hagar) Fannin and Sue Reynolds of Wheelersburg; eight grandchildren, Ricardo Lipscomb Jr. and Ryan Lipscomb of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Michael Bazler of West Portsmouth, Taylor Jones and twins Joseph and Sarah Caswell of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Lexi and Lani Whitt of Lucasville and a lifelong friend who was like a brother, Dave “Biggie” Carter of Wheelersburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents Emory Junior Mougey in 1991 and Mary Alice (Riley) Mougey in 1996, a cousin Steve Williams, long time friend Jeff Robinson and a son in law, Sergeant First Class Ricardo Lipscomb, United States Army, in 2004.

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Sierra Vista Regional Health Center’s Casa de la Paz Hospice for their care and compassion for both Mike and his girls during his illness.

A memorial service will be held at a future date to coincide with Southern Ohio racing season and will be disclosed at a later date by the family.

WFO, dad…WFO!
