On Tuesday, the Scioto County Commissioners passed a resolution officially endorsing the proposed Southern Ohio War Memorial slated to be constructed in Lucasville.
According to material from the foundation, the purpose of the memorial is to honor all fallen heroes from World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War throughout eight southern Ohio counties.
Those counties include, Scioto, Adams, Fayette, Highland, Lawrence, Jackson, Pike and Ross.
The memorial will be located two miles north of Lucaville on a one-acre plot of land that was selected on U.S. 23, near Fairground Road in Lucasville. It was owned by the Scioto County Commissioners and they agreed to allow the foundation use of the land for its War Memorial.
In September, officials with the foundation signed a lease agreement with the Scioto County Commissioners for the necessary land to construct the memorial.
In October a ceremony was held at the site of the memorial to officially break ground.
State Representative Dr. Terry Johnson delivered the keynote address and was quoted as saying, “One of the things we can all rally around and draw upon as a source of strength, is our veteran community. These folks are the heart and soul of our community. To have this memorial here, in their honor, is one of the best things we’ve ever done.”
According to Evan Elliott, Southern Ohio War Memorial Foundation Chairman, similar resolutions of endorsements are being sought from all of the counties that will be a part of the memorial.
He said the organization is continuing to work to obtain the necessary funding for the memorial.
“We have got a consultant working with us now. He is working with all of the county commissioners and businesses throughout the eight counties. Everything is moving along really good,” Elliott said.
He said crews are currently working to clear the land. The cost of the memorial is expected to be raised through fundraisers and private donations.
