Scioto County Commissioner-elect Doug Coleman says he will resign as a Washington Township Trustee at the end of the year.

Coleman said there have been a number of applications turned into the remaining trustees to fill the vacant position.

“I’ve voiced my opinion on who should get it. I have one year left on my term. But, it will be up to the other two trustees as to who will get it,” Coleman said.

According to Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn, the remaining trustees will have 30 days to appoint Coleman’s replacement after his resignation.

Kuhn cited Ohio Revised Code 503.24, “If a township is without a board or if no appointment is made within 30 days after the occurrence of a vacancy, a majority of the persons designated as the committee of five on the last-filed nominating petition of the township officer whose vacancy is to be filled who are residents of the township shall appoint a person having the qualifications of an elector to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term or until a successor is elected.”

He said if both of those things do not happen, the appointment will be left up to Scioto County Probate Judge James Kirsch.

Coleman is set to be sworn-into office as a county commissioner today in the lobby of the Scioto County Court House at 2 p.m. by former state representative Todd Book. Kuhn will serve as master of ceremonies.

Coleman said he is excited to take office.

“I just want to see Scioto County get better. I don’t play politics, I’ve been around construction all of my life and I will do what I think it right. I think I can make Scioto County go if they give me a chance,” Coleman said. “I’ll do a good job, all they have to do is give me a chance. After a year or two, if people don’t like me, don’t think I’m going the job, I’ll quit.”
