Northwest Christmas Concert, Dec. 19


The Northwest Instrumental and Vocal Music Department will be presenting their annual Christmas Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, beginning at 7 p.m. in the NHS Gymnasium. The program will feature: High School Choir, 6th Grade Band, 7th Grade Band, 8th Grade Band, and NHS Concert Band. The concert is admission free. Come out and enjoy some quailty music.


Porstmouth West Christmas Concert, Dec. 15


The Portsmouth West High School Music Department will present its Christmas concert at the high school on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012. The choirs, under the direction of Mrs. Linda Tieman, will begin the performance at 6 p.m. and will feature such selections as “White Christmas,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside” as well as the traditional singing of the “Hallelujah Chorus”.


There will be an intermission before the band, under the direction of Mr. Michael Pierce, concludes the program with selections which include “Sleigh Ride” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. The concert is free and open to the public.


ACT Test Prep Courses Offered At SSU


Looking to improve your score on the ACT and learn new test-taking strategies? Throughout spring semester, University Outreach Services at Shawnee State University is offering ACT test prep classes in every subject. All classes will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The Spring ACT testing dates are Feb. 9, April 13, and June 8.


The classes scheduled are:


Reading: Tuesday, Jan. 15 and Tuesday, March 19;


Math: Thursday, Jan. 17 and Thursday, March 21;


Writing: Tuesday, Jan. 22 and Tuesday March 26;


English: Thursday, Jan. 31 and Thursday, April 4;


Science Reasoning: Tuesday, Jan. 29 and Tuesday, April 2.


The courses cost $149 for all the classes or $49 individually. The REAL ACT Prep Guide with CD is included with paid registration. Payment must be received no later than 48 hours before the beginning date of the series.

SSU Outreach Services Offers Water and Wastewater Personnel Workshops


Shawnee State University Outreach Services will be offering several workshops for water and wastewater personnel throughout spring semester 2013.


Friday, Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., an Industrial Motor Controls workshop will teach students to connect and perform basic programming and operation of variable frequency drives, install motor starting and reversing systems, calculate fuse and heater size requirements for industrial motors, and troubleshoot industrial motor controls.


Friday, Feb. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Introduction to Process Control will cover using automatic control loops for chemical feed and control systems. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to identify the components of an automatic control loop, describe the functions of each component in an automatic control loop, identify where and what type of control loop can be used, identify the components and functions of an automatic manufacturing cell and enter basic control programs.


Friday, March 15, also from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will cover designing semi-complex programmable logic controllers, applying PLCs to real-world applications, and troubleshooting PLC systems.


SSU Associate Professor of Electromechanical Engineering Technology Ken Warfield will be teaching all courses. Each course is worth 5.25 contact hours.
