The Literacy Council of Scioto County has announced the appointment of Tess Midkiff as interim director of the organization following the recent resignation of Susan McComas, who has been serving as the organization's first director. A search committee will be appointed in the near future to employ a new part-time director.

In 2008 Midkiff retired after 27 years as the director of the Shawnee State University's Clark Memorial Library, and was instrumental in the formation of the Literacy Council. She has been a member of LCSC Board of Trustees and has been active on several projects including the 2008 Membership Campaign, "Literacy Changes Lives" and "Bridges out of Poverty." She looks forward to continuing to promote literacy in Scioto County and initiating new projects.

McComas has accepted a full-time position as Resource Development coordinator for The Counseling Center in Portsmouth.

"Susan was able to take our mission and build a strong foundation for this organization while integrating some very worthwhile projects and tools," Midkiff said about McComas' accomplishments at a recent board meeting.

The Literacy Council of Scioto County was founded by the executive officials of the Southern Ohio Medical Center, Shawnee State University and Portsmouth City Schools.

The Literacy Council of Scioto County has an office in Room 150 of Clark Memorial Library and the phone number is: (740) 351-3514.

The Web site is www.literacyscioto.org. Midkiff may be reached through e-mail at director@literacyscioto.org. The mailing address is P.O. Box 293, Portsmouth, OH  45662.
