Southern Ohio Medical Center will host a discussion regarding holiday depression 1 p.m. on Dec. 5. The event is free and open to the public.
The discussion session will be a forum for health professionals and community members to discuss elements of holiday depression.
Though for many, “T’is the season to be jolly,” there are some who struggle with depression during the holiday season. It is because of this fact that SOMC is hosting the Holiday Tea, to provide information on dealing with holiday depression.
The speaker for the event is Susan Goins. Goins is a licensed social worker, and is employed with SOMC Hospice as Bereavement Coordinator.
“Usually depression comes from a loss that a person has had. It can be a personal loss or a physical loss. So we will be talking about the losses and griefs,” Goins said.
Goins said the discussion will also cover the myths about holiday grief. There will also be Continuing Education Units available for nurses and social workers.
The event will take in the Conference Room of the Gibson Building, located on SOMC’s East Campus.
“We want to try to give them options for finding holiday joy amongst the grief and loss that a lot of people experience during the holidays and right before the holidays,” Goins said.
Goins said the key to helping individuals to begin to establish new traditions.
“If they can open their heart to reminiscing, and looking at old holiday traditions that they’ve had with their loved ones, then they can begin to develop some new traditions to honor those loved ones that have passed away,” Goins said.
Additionally, Goins said she works with a “Surviving the Holidays” support group.
“We try to talk about things that will help take anxiety out of the holidays, by helping our members to plan in advance for the holidays,”
