Jacob Tolliver, a Portsmouth West graduate, is known throughout the community for his musical abilities. After the first of the year he will be moving to Las Vegas to perform in a show called ‘Million Dollar Quartet.’

“It (Million Dollar Quartet) started out as a broadway show, there is a Chicago, London and New York City touring show as well. It’s about Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins getting together unexpectedly having an impromptu jam session at Sun Records,” Tolliver said.

Tolliver first auditioned for the show when he was 16 years-old and was told he was to young at the time.

“When I turned 18 they called me. I went to NYC in March and auditioned again. Well nothing has happened since then. Until now,” Tolliver said. “What’s funny is that there is a different casting company for the upcoming Vegas show. They have never seen or heard of me. They found me on YouTube two weeks ago and commented on three videos and even found where I have been in Portsmouth Little Theatre and contacted them trying to get ahold of me. I called them back the next day and they said ‘have you ever heard of the show Million Dollar Quartet? We’d like to fly you out to Vegas to audition for the upcoming Vegas run.”

Tolliver flew out last weekend and auditioned.

“The first day I played a few songs and read a scene from the script. I went back the next day and had a one-on-one with the director to rehearse a few more scenes. When I left they seemed thrilled, they called about five days ago and told me I got the role as an understudy for Jerry Lee Lewis,” Tolliver said.

He said the reason he got the role as understudy is because there really isn’t enough time to learn the role.

“There is only like three weeks of rehearsal. So they are flying in people from the New York City and Chicago touring companies to start the show out while the understudies are getting ‘groomed,” Tolliver said. “Rehearsal starts Jan. 7 and the show starts Feb. 19. So I have to move out there after the first of the year. It’s at the Harrah’s In Vegas. It’s an open ended show which means it could run for years.”

When asked about his reaction about all of this he said, “this is really an opportunity of a life time. Can’t wait to start! I’ve been trying to get this for a few years now and now that I have it, it’s a really satisfying feeling! Super excited! Vegas is also practically the crooner capitol of the world so hopefully after a while I can start up some crooner gigs on the side.”
