The Scioto County Commissioners met with officials from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft Thursday to inquire about the possibility of dredging Holiday Point in Franklin Furnace.

Commissioner Tom Reiser said the issue came up at the intermodal conference held at Shawnee State University earlier this year that he and ODNR officials attended.

“We brought up the fact the (Holiday Point) marina in Franklin Furnace is almost a parking lot, because the water is so shallow and you can hardly get a boat in there,” Reiser said.

According to Reiser, a few years ago the county received a $250,000 grant to dredge the marina.

“We were told it would cost $250,000. When we went to bid there were issues with where the dredging went,” he said.

Reiser said it was assumed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would allow the contractor to put the dredge back into the river at an undetermined location.

“The Corps of Engineers said the dredge had to be taken off site. So the contractor had to secure a site to dump all of that stuff,” Reiser said.

He said bids came in for the project at about $500,000.

Reiser said as the marina continues to fill up, “the situation continues to get worse.”

The Thursday meeting was to inquire about the possibility of ODNR using its dredging equipment to get this done. Reiser does not think the marina has been dredged before.

He said when bigger boats try to enter the marina they drag the bottom.

“I’d say right now the draft on some of bigger boats is no more three feet, it’s almost a walking path,” Reiser said.

Reiser thinks if ODNR could convince the Army Corps of Engineers to allow the dredging to be placed into the river, it could cut project costs in half.

Holiday Point Marina has a capacity of about 250 boats.
