A heavyhearted Waverly (1-8, 0-4) team traveled to Minford (8-1, 3-1) and fell 48-7 Friday evening.

Thursday morning, the Waverly community lost Beau Szoke in a fatal car accident on the way to school. Szoke, a freshman wide receiver and defensive back for the Tigers, was 14-years old.

“Everyone is very, very sad and broken up about this,” Waverly Athletic Director Bo Arnett said. “The team decided to play the game in Beau’s honor.”

Arnett said a handful of players that were close to Szoke were too distraught to participate in the contest. Szoke wore No. 20 for the Tigers.

Szoke’s older sister, Skye, a 16-year old junior cheerleader at Waverly was also in the car at the time of the accident and, according to Arnett, is recovering from surgeries and doing well.

“It’s been a very tough time,” Arnett said.

The Minford boosters had helmet stickers reading “No. 20” made for players of both teams and the Minford athletic department painted both 20-yard-lines orange in honor of Beau.

“The Minford community sends out our condolences for the loss of Beau and hopes for the speedy recovery of Skye,” Minford Athletic Director Jeff Pica said.

The Tigers sent their freshmen players as honorary captains to meet with Minford’s captains, and Minford standout Jared McCray led the teams in prayer from midfield.

A moment of silence took place before kickoff to cap a unified expression of support for the Szoke family which was in attendance for the contest.

After kickoff, Minford’s Sean Berry continued to be a major factor in the Minford offense with 16 carries and 166 yards. He had two touchdowns in the contest as did teammates Grant Piguet and Austin Carter.

The Falcons scored three times before Waverly’s lone score which came on a Dillon Murray 20-yard scamper in the second quarter.

The Tigers wrap up their regular season at Northwest while Minford will host Oak Hill.
