A ceremony was held on Wednesday to break ground for the Southern Ohio War Memorial that will be located north of Lucasville.

Among those in attendance was State Representative Dr. Terry Johnson, who delivered the ceremonies keynote address.

“One of the things we can all rally around and draw upon as a source of strength is our veteran community. These folks are the heart and sole of our community. To have this memorial here in their honor is one of the best things we’ve ever done,” Johnson said.

According to material from the Southern Ohio War Memorial Foundation, the purpose of the memorial is to honor all fallen heroes from World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War throughout eight southern Ohio counties.

Those counties include, Scioto, Adams, Fayette, Highland, Lawrence, Jackson, Pike, and Ross.

The memorial will be located two miles north of Lucasville on a one-acre plot of land along U.S. 23, near Fairground Road in Lucasville. The land is owned by the Scioto County Commissioners and they agreed to allow the foundation use of the land for its War Memorial.

According to Evan Elliott, Chairman of the Southern Ohio War Memorial Foundation the project to build the memorial started a year and a half ago.

He said now that the ground has been broken, construction can begin on the memorial.

“We will now start to remove some of these trees, with the construction part of it to follow. We will put the wall in then, we can start to construct the monument,” Elliot said.

He said the foundation will begin to accumulate all of the names from the eight counties.

The cost of the memorial is expected to be raised through fundraisers and private donations.
