U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officials are expected to discuss several issues surrounding the A-Plant site in Piketon at its next public meeting, scheduled for Oct. 22 at Waverly High School from 6-8 p.m.

Topics for discussion include demolition of the old support buildings, cleanup of former process facilities, cleanup of the soil and ground water and DOE’s commitment to the community.

“We try to hold these public meetings on a quarterly basis with members of the community and to keep the community up to date on what’s going on with the cleanup at the plant,” said Karen Price, Manager of Stakeholder Outreach for Fluor-B&W Portsmouth.

Price said these meeting are important because it keeps the community involved in the decisions being made at the plant.

“It’s important for us to keep the community involved. It’s important for DOE to know the communities values. So, that they can factor those into the decisions they have to make,” Price said.

She said the upcoming meeting will focus on some of the recent cleanup work that’s been done at the plant.

“We recently completed demolition of two plant support buildings. We are going to show some videos of that. We are going to talk about what buildings are going to come down next,” Price said. “We’ve also been doing a lot of cleanup on the process building to shutdown the gaseous diffusion equipment.”

She said at the meeting there will be a brief presentation and afterwards there will an opportunity for those in attendance to talk to site experts.
