The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office believes that have solved a rash of burglaries with the discovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of a Wheelersburg man. Arrested was Matthew L. Dawson, 34, whose last known address was in Wheelersburg.

Dawson has been charged with four counts of burglary, a felony of the second degree; one count of breaking and entering, a felony of the fifth degree, and one count of grand theft auto, a felony of the fourth degree.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his office has been working on several burglaries which occurred throughout the county to include Porter Township, Clay Township, Vernon Township, Green Township and Madison Township in the last two weeks. Donini said detectives had been actively investigating those burglaries and they were able to identify a possible suspect and recover some of the stolen property.
On Friday detectives, along with deputies, searched several residences that resulted in two unrelated arrest on warrants. Donini said detectives learned that the suspect was staying in a house on Cherry Street in Sciotoville, and, with the assistance of the Portsmouth Municipal Court probation officers, detectives were able to gain entry into that residence.
During the search of this house the suspect was located hiding in a mattress. Donini said Dawson had taken a knife and cut a large hole in the mattress in an attempt to concealing his body inside the mattress. The suspect was arrested without incident.

Donini said his detectives were able to recover a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in Kentucky that had just been stolen from a Wheelersburg residence. Dawson was subsequently arrested. Dawson was held on a $68,000 bond and will appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court this morning.

Donini said more charges will be presented to the Scioto County Grand Jury on a later date. He said anyone with any information concerning the burglaries is being requested to contact Detective Jodi Conkel at the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office at 740-351-1091 . He said all calls will remain anonymous.
