The Pike County Red Cross is 95 years old, and to celebrate, the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a competitive wine tasting and fundraising event, Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Lake White Club, 1166 Ohio 552 in Waverly.
“We wanted to do something a little special for Pike County and use it as a friendraiser and a fundraiser,” Mary Arnzen, Executive Director of the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross said.
The Lake White Club is under new ownership - Dave and Pam Crawford and Lloyd and Jodi Harmon.
“They have really changed a lot of things,” Arnzen said. “They built on a big deck in the back. The view there is so beautiful with the lake and the surrounding area. It’s just a great place to have this event.”
Arnzen said there are three ticket options. Option A is a $55 per person ticket that includes a wine tasting at 5 p.m., a surf and turf VIP dinner and wine tasting classes conducted by Dr. George White, starting at 7 p.m., and those wanting to be included in the wine competition should bring three bottles of wine. Option B is a $25 ticket for the wine tasting competition.
Again, the competitor should bring three bottles of wine. Hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting classes are also included in the ticket beginning at 7 p.m. Option C is also $25 and includes wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres from 7-9 p.m. and wine tasting classes.
Participants in the wine tasting competition should bring either white or red wine. However, all bottles must be the same varietal (grape) and made by the same winery. At the event, two of each team’s three bottles are bagged, tagged and ranked by each participant. The third bottle is set aside and left unopened. The teams that bring the three highest ranked wines will divvy up each team’s third unopened bottle.
Tickets are on sale at the Lake White Club, at the Pike County Chamber of Commerce office, or at the Red Cross office at 1801 Robinson Ave. in Portsmouth.
“The proceeds will be specifically for disaster services in the Pike County area,” Arnzen said. “So when you help us you help your neighbor.”
