Series of burglaries reported in Portsmouth
PDT Staff Writer
The Portsmouth Police Department is urging residents of the Gilbert Avenue, 21st Street, and Argonne Road areas to use extra precaution in securing their homes after a series of home burglaries.
“There have been a total of four. Two of them were on Gilbert, one in the 1200 block of 21st, and one in the 2100 block of Argonne,” Portsmouth Police Captain Lynn Brewer said. “In one of them there was an arrest made, but we don’t believe the others were connected to it.”
Brewer said witnesses describe the perpetrator at the others as a white male, around 30-years old, and approximately six feet tall.
“He has actually been confronted by two residents and got away,” Brewer said. “The others found their back doors standing open when they were awakened by a noise in the house.”
In those two cases the perpetrator was gone before the entry was discovered, so there is no description.
“These entries are happening during the late night, early morning hours,” Brewer said.
Brewer talked about the precautions homeowners need to take to protect themselves and their properties.
“They should make sure they lock their doors and have exterior lighting,” Brewer said. “Especially at the rear of their houses. That seems to be the target entry point for this guy, the rear of houses and ones that are dark.”
Brewer said the police need to know about any incident.
“Do not hesitate to call us if they see anybody in the neighborhood that they don’t recognize,” Brewer said.
