The Rev. Virgil E. “Jack” Cooper, 84, of Wheelersburg, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at home.

Jack was born May 31, 1924, in Adams County, to the late Charles Cooper and Ada Mae Bradford Cooper. He was a World War II Navy veteran, was a pastor for over 50 years in the Churches of Christ In Christian Union, retired from Sears and was a member of Cedar Street Church of Christ in Christian Union.

He was married Aug. 30, 1947, to Vivian Gaffin Cooper, who preceded him in death Sept. 10, 2007.

Surviving are one son, Dennis Jay Cooper of West Union; one daughter, Brenda J. Horr of Portsmouth; three grandsons, Charles David Horr and wife Shelley of Portsmouth, Scott Cooper Horr and wife Melissa of Portsmouth, and Todd A. Cooper and wife Ashley of Batavia; three great-grandchildren, Jenna Horr, Hannah Horr and Braden Horr; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and one half sister.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with the Rev. Gary Heimbach officiating, with burial at Kirker Cemetery in West Union, with military graveside rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service at the funeral home.
