Fairland 34, West 14

A season removed from finishing second in a top-heavy SOC II the West Senators did not have the start to the 2012 season they envisioned losing on the road 34-14 to the Fairland Dragons. With the loss comes a lesson and it is one West coach Merrill Tripplett will serve his team well in the season’s longrun.

“They (Fairland) played with great intensity and our kids played hard. They just played harder,” Tripplett said. “I think we looked past them and they gave us a reason never to do that again.”

The Senators looked strong on the first scoring drive of the game capping a 5-play, 71-yard effort with a Justin Crace touchdown run that spanned 37 yards. The extra point made it 7-0 West with 10:15 to play.

However, Fairland would respond with 28 unanswered points behind the effort of Chance Short, who completed 8 of 15 passing and had two touchdowns.

The Senators would cross the goal line only on more time in the game when Zach Frye finished a 7-play, 68-yard drive with a 10-yard run with 7:40 remaining in the game.
