The United Way of Scioto County is looking to expand its operations.


Mary Ann Miars-Peercy Executive Director of the United Way of Scioto County said her organization has expanded its services into Adams County. It will now be known as the United Way of Scioto and Adams Counties.


“There is no United Way in Adams County, our services are much needed there. They have a lot of the issues we are trying to address in Scioto County,” Miars-Peercy said.


Miars-Peercy assured that all of the money we raise in Scioto County will stay in Scioto County. Money that is raised in Adams County will stay in Adams County.


She said more information is forthcoming about the United Way’s expansion into Adams County.


Miars-Peercy said the United Way also has a school supply drive underway.


“We are accepting donations school supplies now through August 17th. All of the school supplies collected will be distributed to needy students in the public school system in Scioto County,” Miars-Peercy said. “As a result of this school supply drive we hope to help 5,200 students. Last year we helped 5,100 students. We look for an increase this year because of the economy.”


Donations of school supplies, can be dropped off at the United Way offices located at, 1671 Grant Street in Portsmouth or by calling 740-353-521.


The United Way is also planning for its annual Ducky Derby, which will be held noon September 2 at the Court Street Landing, during the River Days Festival.


“All of the proceeds will go to our literacy program for children,” Miars-Peercy said. “Through this program we hope to provide books to children in need.”


She said each duck is a $5 donation and can be purchased by calling or visiting the United Way offices.
