The United Way of Scioto County is looking to expand its operations by bringing 2-1-1 to Scioto County.
According to 211us.org, “2-1-1 is an easy to remember telephone number that, where available, connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities. In 2010, 2-1-1 services in the United States answered more than 16.4 million calls.” According to, www.211ohio.net, there are currently 19 2-1-1 call centers throughout Ohio serving the residents of 34 counties.
Mary Ann Miars-Peercy, Executive Director of the United Way of Scioto County, said they are in the process of applying to Ohio AIRS (Alliance for Information and Referral Systems) to receive designation as a 2-1-1 call center. She said if the designation is granted, the launch of 2-1-1 in Scioto County would not take place until June of 2013.
Miars-Peercy said the United Way is in the process of building a database of social service agencies within Scioto County and the services they provide, to be used by 2-1-1.
“2-1-1 is a nationally recognized, easy to remember phone number that quickly and effectively connects people in need with resources 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No longer will a caller spend time making phone calls to 10 to 14 places looking for one service. With 2-1-1, residents find many available resources with one phone call,” Miars-Peercy said.
She said this will help alleviate unnecessary calls to 9-1-1.
On Tuesday, the Scioto County Commissioners signed a letter, supporting the United Way of Scioto County and their efforts to bring 2-1-1 to Scioto County. “We feel confident that this great service will provide a much needed benefit to everyone in the community,” the commissioners’ letter stated.
