The area is gearing up for the start of the 2012 edition of the Scioto County Fair. While some activities will be going on this Saturday and Sunday, the actual event will kick off on Monday with a full slate of activities, including the U.S. Freestyle Motorcross Championship Series that begins at 8 p.m. at the grandstand.
Working goat judging, booth judging, and beautification projects judging will be going on throughout the day, with Valley High School Band at 7 p.m., and introduction of the Fair Queen and Court at 7:45 p.m.
Tuesday, will see an open poultry show, flower show and pet show, with the Northwest High School Band performing at 5 p.m. and the Green High School Band performing at 7 p.m. The formal opening of the fair at 8 will be highlighted by an appearance by Sea Gayle/Arista Nashville recording artist Jerrod Niemann.
Wednesday will feature one of country music’s top entertainers — the group Little Big Town at 8 p.m. Before that show gets underway, there will be a 4-H beef show, a 4-H western horse show, and open rabbit show, and the very popular kiddie tractor pull. At 5 p.m., the Wheelersburg High School Band will perform, and at 7 p.m. it’s the Portsmouth West High School Band.
Thursday is a great day for kids and their families as the Circus Continental has two performances - at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday will also be the day for the flower show and the 4-H poultry and rabbit auction, with the Minford High School Band performing at 7 p.m.
On Friday, Senior Citizens Day, there will be a dairy cattle show, and English horse show, and open dairy show. Clay High School Band will perform at 5 p.m., with the Showman of Showmen contest in the Livestock Arena at 6 p.m., and Exile on the grandstand at 8.
Saturday closes out the fair in a big way. with the very popular Junior Fair Livestock Sale at 10 a.m. The sale will be conducted in this order - lambs, steers, goats and swine. Portsmouth High School Band will perform at 2 p.m. and the most popular event of the week, the Cavalcade of Thrills Demolition Derby in the grandstand arena will close out this year’s festivities.
All day admission is $8 for anyone two years of age or older with a Tuesday and Wednesday special, buy one admission ticket for $8 and get one free from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Options include $24 season tickets, which does not include rides, and $7 Good Any Day tickets. A minimum of five Good Any Day tickets must be purchased. Armed services members are admitted free with official identification. Gates open at 10 a.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. All grandstand shows and midway rides are free. Health tests are also free.
