William “Bill” George Jr., 94, of Portsmouth, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 24, 2012, from SOMC Hospice. He was born June 13, 1918, in Portsmouth, to the late William George, Sr. and Irma Hazelbaker George.

A veteran of World War II, Bill served in the US Navy as a gunner.

He was employed as a manager for Labolds Scrap Metals; and a manager for Doerr & Associates. He was also a barber that could give a great haircut. He retired from Portsmouth Beauty Supply.

Bill was a 1937 charter member of Temple Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, and served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He took great pleasure in playing golf with his friends and singing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Marcella A. George, on March 23, 2012.

Bill is survived by two sons, William (Connie) George, III and Harold (Marilyn) George; one daughter, Constance (Michael) Snipes; grandchildren, Lara (Jeff) Ramey and Heather Shoemaker (both of whom were loving caregivers to their grandparents), Josh George, Christopher (Patricia) George, Robert George, Michelle (Rick) Mays, Doug (Trenda) Denney and Scott Denney; and several great-grandchildren.

Bill was a man of integrity. He was a loving husband and father, and was a wonderful example of godly character before his children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth with Pastor John Gowdy officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Daehlers.
