PDT Sports Report
With only nine players available and with a major home tournament on the horizon, Post 23 interim coach Andy Riehl went with Alex Hartley on the mound in Wednesday’s second game at Hillsboro Post 129.
After two rough innings, Hartley settled down and threw three innings of shutout baseball. The only problem was that Will Howard scored the lone run for Post 23 in the top of the fourth as Post 23 fell 5-1, splitting the two-game set.
Hartley threw five innings in his first appearance of the season. He allowed two earned runs on nine hits as he struck out one and walked one.
The reason for the low attendance for Post 23 was because the Wheelersburg baseball team was in Columbus Wednesday afternoon, recognized for their recent state championship. The goal was to have some of the players back in time for the finale.
The third annual Gene Bennett Classic starts Thursday at Branch Rickey Park and various Scioto County High Schools.
