Portsmouth Post 23 had one more tuneup before today’s Gene Bennett Classic in a doubleheader against Hillsboro Post 129.
In the opener, Post 23 received a complete game from Minford graduate Tyler Sanford and a 2-for-4 performance with two runs batted in from West alum Tate Bailey in a 5-3 victory. Both Sanford and Bailey will be playing for the Shawnee State Bears as freshmen next spring.
All five Post 23 runs came in the first two innings of the game.
Sanford struck out five, walked four, allowed four hits and allowed three runs (one earned) in the contest for his second win of the season. The win improved Post 23’s record to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in District 7 action.

Post 23 will open action tonight against the Springfield-based Ohio Warhawks. The contest will start at 6:30 p.m. at Branch Rickey Park.
Before the game, opening ceremonies will be conducted at 6 p.m.
