Church scandal story an all-time low

On Saturday, May 26, Frank Lewis took the Portsmouth Daily Times to an all-time low with a classic case of sensational journalism. His front page story “Judge: Relationship with girl violates probation” involves a pastor and his son at a local church here in Scioto County. After reading this article I was left asking “Is this the best that our local newspaper can do?” What’s sad is that the real news like the students raising scholarship money and volunteers placing flags on veteran’s graves was not juicy enough to make the top.

I believe this story was made the top headline because it had to do with an alleged scandal involving a Christian minister, his son and their church. If the Bales family were Muslim I wonder if this story would have even been printed. These cases of yellow journalism should not be accepted by the citizens of Portsmouth and Scioto County.

It is time to stand up and say no to this type of reporting. I am asking every subscriber to cancel your subscription to the Portsmouth Daily Times and email or call the paper and let them know that you are tired of these type of “dirt” stories. We are interested in real news not scandal-mongering!

Frank Lew...I applaud you and the Portsmouth Daily Times and the editor for printing this story. It takes a great deal of strength to stand up against the xian's views of matters such as this.

Any reader who is offended over this type of reporting can't be someone with good moral values! Why would you want to silence the wrong done in this action? Tell me...what would you propose that we do Mr. Estes? Keep it quite and don't inform the public of this type of person? Pass this person on to another congregation?

Just because someone belongs to the xian faith doesn't give them any special rights or considerations when they break the laws! Or anything for that matter!

Mr. Lewis, Mr. Editor...great reporting!

Mr. Dempsey although I agree with most of what you said, we are Christians, not xians. And yes I believe that stories as such should be reported. Anytime a sex offender is revealed to the public, it's a good thing Mr. Estes. That does not depend on whether or not it happens in a church building. If anything, that Pastor is more accountable because he knows what his son is.

I tell you what Mr.Estes. I'm a Christian and if it was my little girl that was in this situation, the young man involved would definitely has cause to fear for his life and the possiblility of being exposed in the news for what he is. One more thing, in the muslim world, that young man would be stoned to death publicly and his dead body on display to the public so when you ask if he was muslim, would they have printed this story. The answer is yes and much more.

Mr.Dempsey, not all Christians are looking for special rights and consideration. It is not fair to lump us all together.
