The Pike SWCD is announcing the theme for the 2012 photo contest. The District is looking for photos of any season of “Old Barns in Pike County”. This means that the barn has to be located in Pike County, but the photographer can live outside of the county. The contest is open to all ages. The deadline is July 1, 2012.

First place winners will receive a check of $75.00, second place, $50.00 and third place will receive a $25.00 check. You will also be honored at our annual meeting in September.

The Pike SWCD Largest Hickory in Pike County Contest

Individuals interested in nominating a hickory tree for Largest Hickory Tree in Pike County contest should contact the Pike SWCD office. The tree must be within Pike County, and only one nomination per tree will be accepted. The tree does not have to be on the property of the nominator, but the owner must be aware of the nomination. All species are being accepted for nomination, as we are looking for the largest hickory in general, not the largest of any particular species. The deadline for nominating a tree is Friday, August 17th. Once a nomination is received by the District office, SWCD personnel will contact the owner to obtain permission to measure the tree and complete the official nomination form. Trees are measured based on three measurements, including the circumference, total tree height, and the average crown spread. The individual who nominates the largest tree measured for the contest will receive recognition and a monetary award at the Pike SWCD Annual Meeting and Banquet in September.
