Volunteers with the Scioto County Memorial Day Association will place flags on 3,000 veterans graves throughout Scioto County this weekend, in preparation of Memorial Day festivities.

Rhonda Madison, grave flagging chairwoman for the Scioto County Memorial Day Association, said placing flags on the graves is very important.

“These guys and girls (veterans) gave their lives, so we can live the way we live today,” Madison said.

She said the effort would not be possible without the help of volunteers.

“Every year we need all the help we can get to make sure these veterans receive the honor they so richly deserve,” Madison said.

She said volunteers are need Saturday and Sunday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth starting at 9 a.m. to help place all of the flags before Monday.

She said about 100 people help place the flags each year.

This was Sharon Danzer’s first year helping.

“My dad was a Navy veteran, so I do this to show respect to him and all of the other veterans,” said Danzer of Wheelersburg. “I’ve found this to be very rewarding.”

To help, call Madison at 740-354-0651 or 740-858-5388.
