A wet-on-wet oil painting course is being offered at Shawnee State University from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for beginners and 7:30 to 9 p.m. for experienced painters on each Tuesday from June 5 through June 26 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, Room 303.

Wet-on-wet oil painting is a technique in that has been around for centuries beginning with the early Dutch painters, such as, Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden and French impressionists like Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and realists like John Singer Sergeant and Robert Henri.

The method is quickly painting over already applied wet paint. It is a fast process because the painter must paint all of the layers before any of the paint dries. The late Bob Ross used this technique in teaching others how to paint.

“With my experience in oil painting, and certification training, I will share, step-by-step, the wet-on-wet method,” said instructor Toni Hatfield. “In no time you’ll be creating beautiful landscapes and seascapes. Any degree of experience and inexperience is welcome. There’s no failure, only learning.”

The technique for wet-on-wet usually includes color wash, splatter, scratching, sponging and bleeding. This course is for both experienced and inexperienced painters. Participants must purchase their own supplies available at discounted prices at Toy Town and Hobby Lobby. The fee for the class is $69.
