Mildred “Mid” E. Rader was devoted to children and when she was 101 years old and she would visit schools and read stories to them. She worked on a program with senior citizens, BABES, talking to children about alcohol and drug abuse through the RSVP group. Rader would listen to the news every day and also listened to two to three talking books a week.

“She always talked about the stock market or other news,” said her nephew, Randy Warman. “She was dedicated to learning and that is why she donated to Shawnee State.”

Born in 1905, Rader was the first Miss Portsmouth and she starred in a silent movie, “Portsmouth’s Hero.” Warman, who retired from SSU, said she loved being active and boating, in particular.

Rader didn’t have any children of her own but when she died just five days short of her 106th birthday last October, she didn’t forget Shawnee State, leaving an unrestricted gift to the university.

The funds of this donation are administered by the SSU Development Foundation. Individuals or organizations interested in establishing a fund can call the SSU Development Foundation at 740-351-3284.
