Mary Cecilia Grooms, 87, passed away May 3, 2012, at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1925, in Portsmouth, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Helena (Hasenauer) Kielmar. She served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, and was a member of the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. She worked at the Liberty Café, which was the Kielmar’s family-owned business, and she also worked and later retired from Harts Department Store (Big Bear Plus). Mary was an avid sports fan, especially of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. She was also a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Velton (Pick) Grooms; beloved daughter, Peggy Jenkins; and grandson, Baby Earl Jenkins. She is survived by three children, Linda (Greg) Porter of Cincinnati, Helena (Terry) Grooms of Wheelersburg and Velton (Butch) P. Grooms of Middletown; son-in-law Dan Jenkins of Portsmouth, and daughter-in-law Holly Grooms. Cherished grandchildren are Greg (Julie) Porter, Michael (Sara) Porter, Evan (Carisa) Porter and Brent (Christy) Porter, Mandy (Brad) Meeker, Danny Jenkins, Kristy (Matt) Stienecker, Lori Grooms, Perry Grooms, Sherrie Grooms, Trish (Chris) Russell, Trina (Larry) Reynolds, and Robert Russell II. She was also blessed with 18 great-grandchildren, whom she loved very much.

She is also survived by two brothers, Stephen Kielmar and Louis (Freda) Kielmar, both of Portsmouth; two sisters, Emma (Roy) Landberg of Mich., and Helen (Jim) Courson of California; two sisters-in-law, Helen Kielmar and Saundra Kielmar, both of Portsmouth; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Kielmar and Richard Kielmar; and one sister, Edna Kielmar.

In addition to her children and grandchildren, she was blessed with a very special niece and nephew, Kathy and Randy Nelson, who provided her with love and care during the last years of her life.

The family will receive friends at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth on Sunday, May 6, 2012, from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012, at St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church with Father Adam Streitenberger officiating. A military burial service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.
