The SOC II tennis tournament continued Wednesday afternoon at Mound Park with Valley’s Blake Yates and Adam Buckler winning the doubles title.
Yates and Buckler continued their postponed match against Waverly’s Caleb Brown and Nathan Wilburn and won 6-1, 6-3 then took down Kylar Smith of and Caleb Marsh of Minford 6-0, 6-1 to get to the championship match.
On the other side of the bracket, Waverly’s Phillip Hart and Carter Good resumed their match against Trevor High and Scott Adkins of Valley and won 7-6, 7-5 then beat Wheelersburg’s Felipe Manquez and Ethan Hiles 6-1, 6-1 to reach the final.
Yates and Buckley took down Hart and Good 6-4, 6-4 to win the SOC II Doubles Tournament Title.
On the singles side, Noah Thiel of Minford beat Trevor James of Waverly 6-0, 6-0 and faced Wheelersburg’s Kollin Hiles in the semifinal.
Hiles beat Ben Avery of Waverly Tuesday and Tyler Sherwood 6-3, 6-2 Wednesday to reach the semifinal against Thiel.
Thiel defeated Hiles 6-0, 6-0 in the semis to reach Thursday’s SOC singles final.
Nick Johnson of Valley will be Thiel’s opponent in the final after he continued and won a postponed match 6-0, 6-0 over Walker Roe of Wheelersburg and then defeated Brady Collins of Waverly 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Johnson and Thiel will play at 5 p.m. today at Mound Park for the SOC Singles Championship.
SOC I tournament kicks off
The SOC I tournament began Wednesday afternoon at the Shawnee State courts.
Emma Gohmann of Notre Dame defeated Linus Singer of Clay 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round as James Mohr of Glenwood beat East’s Jessica Mead 6-1, 6-0.
Notre Dame’s Weston Craig beat East’s Noah Colley 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to play Emily Waugh of Glenwood but their match was postponed due to lack of sunlight.
Clay’s Drew White beat Notre Dame’s Luis Benitez 6-0, 6-1 in the second round while Glenwood’s Miranda Litz defeated Gohmann 6-3, 6-2.
Nick Harris of Clay beat Mohr 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
Winners from Wednesday’s second-round matches will play in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. today at the Shawnee State courts.
On the doubles side, Austin Raines and Justin Moore of Glenwood beat Clay’s Elden Sarajlic and Eric Manninen 6-0, 7-5 in the first round.
Ty Hiles and Angelos of Notre Dame beat Lloyd and Lindamood of East 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.
Notre Dame’s Kevin Lewis and J.P. Kayser beat Glenwood’s Matt Mohr and Bentley Bledsoe 6-3, 7-6 and 10-8 in a tiebreak.
Clay’s Michael Schmidt and Mark Shafer beat East’s Keys and Hwang 6-0, 6-0.
In the second round, Raines and Moore beat Hiles and Angelos 6-1, 6-3, while Schmidt and Shafer defeated Lewis and Kayser 7-6, 7-4 in a tiebreak and 6-0.
The finals will take place at 4:30 p.m. today at the Shawnee State courts.
