For the second-straight season, a Scioto County baseball coach has reached a major milestone.
Minford’s Tim Martin reached 300 career coaching victories as the visiting Falcons defeated South Webster 8-0 in Monday’s SOC II action.
“The Lord’s blessed me and given me the opportunity to teach these kids this game,” Martin said. “This is a tribute to both the players and the coaches I’ve had for 16 years.”
Tyler Sanford, the lone senior on the Minford squad, made sure he could do all he could to secure the win. On the mound, Sanford went the distance, striking out seven, walking one and allowing two hits for his third win of the season.
“He was locked in and no one else was going to throw this ball game other than him,” Martin said.
At the plate, he was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double.
“He played a good ball game in about every aspect,” Martin said.
Among those in attendance included former Falcon catcher Scott Summers. Summers was on the team when Martin recorded his first career coaching victory.
“It’s great to see some of those guys coming out to support you,” Martin said.
Martin also wanted to give thanks to his wife, Chris. He stated without her understanding with his scouting duties that come along with his coaching job, he would not be at this mark.
Last season, Martin’s friend and Valley coach Dean Schuler reached his 500th victory. Schuler sent Martin a text after the game congratulating him on the accomplishment.
Time for celebration is short as Minford travels to Ironton today for the first of two meetings within a week. The last time the two squads met in the final week of the regular season and the first game of the postseason was in the 2009 campaign.
The Falcons won both games that season.
