Jack Elsworth Besco, 90, of Portsmouth, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Hill View Healthcare. He was born in Sciotoville July 17, 1921, to the late Theasel and Jessie Mae Cunningham Besco. Jack was retired from the former New Boston Coke Corp., the former Empire Detroit Steel Corp. and was a self-employed contractor in Portsmouth and in Florida. He was a member of the former Boulevard United Methodist Church, a member of the Aurora Masonic Lodge 48, a 1941 graduate of PHS and an Army veteran of WWII, where he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Surviving Jack is his wife of 67 years, Ruth F. Besco, whom he married in Portsmouth on April 2, 1945; his daughter, Barbara Ann Besco of Portsmouth and two sisters, Clotine Craig of Palm City, Fla., and Ivadell (Gene) Smrekar of Columbus.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth, where friends may call from noon until the funeral hour on Wednesday. The Rev. John Robbins will officiate with interment following in the Memorial Burial Park.
