It’s time to catch the fever … baseball fever that is, as The Portsmouth Daily Times and its supporting advertisers join together to bring readers a new contest that affords both bragging rights and a chance at cash prizes.

The Fan Fever contest began Monday and runs for seven weeks, allowing baseball fanatics — and even the rookies — to get into the swing of ranking the best American League and National League players this year.

It works like this: Visit www.portsmouth-dailytimes.com, click on Local Features, then Contests, then the Fan Fever logo and follow the simple steps to register. Participants will be given a list of players and asked to rank them in a variety of categories, including strikeouts, at-bats and RBI.

Then, check daily to change your rankings as the season progresses. In fact, you can make those changes until 11:59 p.m. May 27, when the contest closes.

Winners, however, won’t be selected until after the All-Star break, about July 4.

A national cash prize of $500 will be given to the winner and a $25 prize will be awarded at the local level to the person who comes closest in their rankings.

If there is more than one winner, a random drawing will be held at the national level to determine the prize winner.

Log on, sign up, and test your baseball skills. Who knows, they might just be good enough to get a home run.
