SCIOTOVILLE — For those who attended the West Union-East softball doubleheader Thursday, they were treated to two games that featured two different styles of outcomes.

In the opener, the Lady Tartans accomplished a rare feat. Within a span of nine pitches in the bottom of the fourth, Brooklyn Meadows, Torri Kelley and Tiffani Wollard all hit home runs to help East win the opener 10-0 in six innings.

“I’ve been a part of softball for a long time, 12 or 13 years, and that’s the first time I’ve seen it,” Lady Tartans coach Adam Bailey said. “It’s neat for the girls, it’s neat being the coach just seeing it.

“We’ve really been stressing to our girls about hitting the last few games. I thought today they were a little bit more focused at the plate and it showed.”

The offensive explosion — with 14 hits — was more than enough for pitcher Haley Fisher, who struck out four and allowed two base runners for her sixth victory of the season. She also had a homer in the game.

“She did a good job of getting ahead in the count, getting ahead with first-pitch strikes,” Bailey said. “…I thought the defense fielded the ball real well behind her and she’s a good leader on the mound for us.”

East held a 2-1 lead going into the seventh but watched as the Lady Dragons scored two runs and forced the Lady Tartans to beat them in their final at-bat.

And a walk-off is how East swept the two-game set. With two on and none out, Jessie Monroe hit a two-run double to finish the game 4-3.

“I’m real proud of our girls, they had enough fortitude in them to come back and buckle down when they had to,” Bailey said. “Jessie came up and made a big hit for us, a lot of pressure.”

Fisher won the finale as well, striking out five and walking just one. The Lady Tartans will host a tri Saturday morning as New Boston and Coal Grove will also participate in the weekend festivities.
