The Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) awarded OSMA member and State Rep. Terry Johnson, DO, (R-McDermott) with the Voice of Medicine Award at the association’s annual meeting in Columbus.
“I cannot think of a better advocate for our efforts and a true voice for medicine and patients than my fellow physician,” said Charles J. Hickey, MD, president of the OSMA. “Dr. Johnson’s work as a physician and an elected representative has helped make tremendous strides in the fight against the epidemic of prescription drug abuse and diversion in Ohio.”
A former Scioto County coroner and past president of the Scioto County Medical Society, Johnson is currently serving his first term in the Ohio House of Representatives. He represents the 89th House District, which includes Scioto County and parts of Lawrence and Adams counties. He was a sponsor and a driving force behind House Bill 93, legislation aimed at curbing prescription drug abuse in Ohio by regulating pain clinics. That bill is credited as one of the main reasons for the closing of all nine pain clinics in Scioto County.
Johnson, who has continued to maintain his private medical practice in Lucasville, is also the medical director and provider at The Counseling Center in Portsmouth.
The Voice of Medicine Award is presented to individuals for advancing the OSMA’s mission of improving the practice of medicine for physicians, their staff and patients. More information is available at www.osma.org/voiceofmedicine.
The Ohio State Medical Association is a statewide association representing 20,000 Ohio physicians, residents, medical students and practice managers. Hickey said OSMA is dedicated to improving the practice of medicine for physicians, their staff and patients, by advocating their position, saving them time and money, and promoting the medical profession. The OSMA is affiliated with the American Medical Association on the national level and county medical societies on the local level.
